Economic Empowerment

The root cause of suffering in the three operational areas is poverty. Consequently, families are unable to access basic needs and to provide care and support for their children. RGDP has been intervening to support the children since their families lack sufficient incomes to support them with education and other basic needs. Although RGDP has been trying to economically empower the parents and caregivers, there has not been a coherent developed model hence; the parents are unable to meet their obligations of supporting their children.

The economic empowerment programme will package an economic development model for savings and credit targeting the very poor who are incidentally not targeted by micro-finance organisations.

Strategic goal

Improved livelihoods and incomes of parents/care givers and other groups such as PLWAs by increasing their capacities to start and manage viable enterprises

Key Strategies

Economic empowerment program will focus on three areas: establishment of savings and credit, business training and mentoring. The following are key strategies

Undertake research to design a business development model suitable for the very poor people
Promote the savings and credit scheme model to the existing groups of PLWAs and caregivers and other similar people
Train groups on the operations and management of savings and credit schemes
Identify groups operating successful similar model of credit and savings schemes and organise exposure visits for the groups for shared learning and networking
Fund raise grants to boost the savings and credit schemes established so as to increase available funds for borrowing by members
Develop innovative business training program for the savings and credit members starting with business start-ups and management
Incorporate product developed in the training to ensure enterprises started are innovative and highly profitable
Link the savings and credit groups to business mentors for mentoring and support
Establish a marketing support services of linking the groups to markets locally and internationally
Facilitating shared learning by organising annual business conventions and exhibitions for the members
